Biographical Sketch of John A. Knudsen
1938 John was born in Brooklyn, N.Y.
1956 He received the Junior School of the Art Institute of Chicago's Scholarship.
1960 He continued on to Luther College in Decorah, Iowa where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree.
1963 At the University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa he received his Master of Fine Arts Degree. He majored in printmaking and studied under Mauricio Lasansky and in painting under Eugene Ludins.
1963 He began teaching at Silvermine School of Art, New Canaan, Connecticut.
1964-67 In the art department he taught at Mount Prospect High School.
1967 At the recently established William Rainey Harper College in Palatine, Illinois he became the first professor hired to The College. He continued his tenure until the spring of 1997. He taught design, drawing, life drawing, painting, and printmaking. He established the National Print and Drawing Show which continues today celebrating it's 37th year.
1974 He brought his family to Paris where he studied under Stanely William Hayter at Atelier 17 on sabbatical from Harper College for 5 months. Artists such as Picasso, Miro, Giacometti, Calder, Chagall, Pollack, Rothko, Lasansky and others studied printmaking at this studio.
1983 Through Harper College he lead many classes and tours to Belgium, Great Britain, France and Spain to study European art and culture.
President of the Chicago Rug Society
1993 The John A. Knudsen Workshop/Gallery is established in Union Pier, Michigan. It was used as his private studio which he also invited many to enjoy viewing his artwork on display. It is still open by appointment only.
2014 He died at the age of 76.
